The most famous legend of Positano is without doubt the one linked to the particular shape of the mountain which overlooks Montepertuso, it is characterized by a big hole.

It is said that once devil challenged the Blessed Virgin Mary for the ownership of the hamlet saying that the one who would reign there was the one who reached for first the opposite side of the mountain.

The Blessed Virgin put the finger on the stone and a big hole was opened and this allowed her to reach the opposite slope while the devil had to go away. Local inhabitants can still recognize the prints of the devil’s escape on the rock.
