Atrani, according to local traditions, is the native home of the famous Masaniello. Revolutionary head of the population, born by a person from Atrani (Antonia Gargano), he destroyed Naples in occasion of the rebellion against taxation imposed by Spanish government. Today it is shown to visitors the house where presumably Masaniello was born, at the bottom of the rock where arises the nice S. Maria del Bando Church, and at a short distance from the grotto where he should have taken refuge escaping from Naples.

History says, instead, that Masaniello was baptized in Naples, even though his mother’s surname (Gargano), spread in Atrani and in Amalfi, might truly indicate his origin in this area.
